Wasing Estate
BackgroundThe Wasing Estate covers three villages and several thousand acres of prime Berkshire land. Under the ownership of the same family since 1759, Wasing has matured gracefully over 250 years surviving the many crises that have beset country estates in the last two centuries. In recent years the Estate has diversified into conservation and fishing, boasting one of the UK’s finest course fishing estates. The latest venture, at Wasing Park, has been to create the ‘venue of venues’, for weddings and conferences. Keen to utilize timber from the estates own woodlands the owners decided to install a woodchip boiler to provide heat to 6 buildings and an outdoor swimming pool. SolutionA purpose built wood chip store was constructed by the main contractor, in an existing barn. Measuring approximately 15 metres long by 3.5 meters wide the store can hold up to 25 Tonnes of woodchip and is equipped with a hydraulically operated moving floor which extracts woodchip from the store and deposits it into a floor mounted feed screw. Woodchip from this screw is deposited into the bottom of an uplift feed screw which deposits the chip into the back of a 240kW KSM 240XL boiler. Adjacent to the woodchip boiler is a back up oil fired boiler of a similar output. Over 500 meters of pre-insulated flexible pipe was installed connecting the boiler plant with the various buildings and swimming pool.
